[FEATURE] B.U.M. IS BACK – IF YOU CAN FIND IT

M O M J E A N Z – They used to be lame, now they’re rad.

AND THEY’RE EVERYWHERE because trendy twenty-somethings and the tweens longing to be those older kids are turning mom jeans into adorbs high-waisted cutoffs, and I’m totally into it.

I crept over to SAZZ VINTAGE in Old City to see what mama-butt makers they had to offer, and I was in for a serious candy-striped treat. After browsing the $25 t-shirt rack (all of which were 100% cotton DREAMZ) I traipsed into the pants section. Their mom jean selection was on point, but something better screamed JJJJACCCKKKIIIEEE, and it…it…it ’twas…..

(NOT SOAP POISONING, BUT ->) THESE UNREAL VINTAGE B.U.M. BRAND SHORTIES FOR $38. #IDIE (PS talk about faded glory – look at dat ass logo).

Vintage shopping to me is a lot like living in the gayborhood; Some of the hottest finds are just a tease. I mean, how many times have you come across the perfect blazer with shoulder pad inserts only to find out its sleeves are too short, the bust is too big, or it likes dudes? Total bummer. So, when I tried these babies on and they fit like a glove, I naturally came out of the fitting room and looked at my ass in the mirror for as long as it took the manager to realize and say, “Those were meant for you.” Music to my ears. ↴

So, B.U.M. (aka Chauvin International, Ltd) has been an L.A. based brand since ’85 (see the photo collage below in case you forgot).

I hit up their Facebook page to see what they’ve been up to since then, and the sight is quite sad. B.U.M. press releases boast tons of pride in reinventing their image for the “updated streetwear” style of the ’00s. But I have to wonder, why be the overly branded, cookie cutter outfitters à la American Eagle & GAP when you can revel in the resurgence of your ’80s/’90s success and bring back everything you used to be? That’s what we want, after all.

Am I asking too much? I just don’t want to see a brand with throwback trend potential fall into the throes of being just another t-shirt on the People of Walmart Tumblr.

So, mom-jean and ’90s lovers of the world, those B.U.M. overalls you wore to a field trip in 1993 and never wanted to see again, yet wish to see again so badly are back. You just gotta find them.

Super Fun Fact about SAZZ VINTAGE: Each of their shopper bags are different. While my credit card was processing, I caught the manager with a stack of blank brown paper bags and a pile of Sharpies in every color. Hope this doesn’t get her in trouble because it’s super cool.
